“If there's any one thing that I hate in this world, it’s mediocrity” (Josh Eberly 10/20/16).
Damn true. Why settle for average when you can pursue greatness. I will strive to be the best damn person I can be. I will run hard until I am the best runner that I can be. I will set high standards for myself and work towards achieving them. I will achieve my goals, because I am confident that I stand above mediocrity. Next step: set goals for ski season and start solidifying goals and races for ultra running in 2017. Talk to coach Eberly about a custom training plan for 2017 summer geared towards high volume, but mindful of a sub 24 Leadville and a 20 hour Javelina 100. Set goals for long term ultra running. Design my post college life broadly.
“there are two types of people in this world: those who fuck around, and those who don't fuck around. Be the second kind.”
I am deliberately choosing to be the second kind of person in order to rise above mediocrity. As Duncan Callahan has told me on several occasions:
"Do things with purpose and passion" (2016).
If any of this resonates with you, then do yourself a favor and start living life with direction and intention.

On another note, Moab Trail Marathon was this past weekend, capping the 2016 trail running season. The race also doubled as the USA Track and Field Trail Marathon Championships, so the competition ran deep. Here's the rough summary of how my race went:
An amazing way to end the season! The Moab Trail Marathon weaves through canyons, scales the red Moab walls, and meanders across technical slick-rock. The course has approximately 4,000 feet of elevation gain and loss; it is sure to shred your legs. My goal was a sub-4 hour race. I started off conservatively as planned, and ran smooth up till the mile 14 climb. I had one hand held with 5 gu's tucked in my shorts. I took one every 40 minutes to start along with drinking 12 oz. of tailwind in the first 9.7 miles. My 3rd gu was at the bottom of the mile 14 climb and contained 60 mg. of caffeine. I power hiked hard and ran easy up the whole climb passing many people.

About 30 minutes after the gu from the bottom of the climb, I had started rolling again, but decided to take another gu because I was hungry. I passed Duncan and Riley at this point (about mile 17) and decided to start racing. I felt great up top, had alot of caffeine in me, and was ready to roll. I started picking people off and truly racing! I put power in my stride and soon passed the Leadville 100 2016 women's winner Claire Gallagher who seemed to be having a tough time. I had a fifth gu on the road about a half mile from the mile 21.3 aid station at the top of the last large descent, then stuck to coke and poweraid for the remaining portion. Just before the 21.3 aid, I had passed Jesherun and Christian. Although I was moving well and pushing hard, I felt cramping coming on soon if I had to climb again, so I downed 2 salt tabs just before the mile 21.3 aid as well. I then bombed the descent from the mile 21.3 aid to the best of my ability, only crashing once.
As I lapped through the 23.3 mark and passed my friends at the finish, I hurled my bottle up to Kelsie, grabbed a coke, and bolted. Thinking I could rush through the last 5k was a bit dreamy as I would find. The last 5k has many obstacles, including a tunnel, a culvert, multiple ladders, fixed line climbing, and very sandy washes. I was on the verge of cramping on every rock scaling obstacle, but I still pushed on. I passed yet a couple more people and told myself to be confident in my fitness. Pain is temporary after all. The last mile was a breeze. It was almost all flat with only a short and steep rise. I found a tempo and pushed. I clamored up the final climb, and burst across the finish line. Official finish time: 3:54:35. Overall Place: 40th. Gender Place: 36th. Age Group 20-29: 12th place. No low points. No dip in pace. Lots of fun. Left it all out there. I was satisfied.
